Carie McBain

Carie McBain (Wapeg paqtesmesk)
Founder of Ugpiganjig Trading Post
Mi'kmaq artist from Eel River Bar First Nation

Carie McBain, whose Indigenous name is Wapeg paqtesmesk, is a proud Mi'kmaq woman from Eel River Bar First Nation. She is a talented beadworker, leatherworker, and traditional dancer. Carie started beading as a way to heal from trauma and reconnect with her culture. It became a personal journey of healing, growth, and learning.

With support from her community and mentors, she improved her skills and began to share her creations through Carie McBain Creations. Later, she opened Ugpiganjig Trading Post, where she sells her handmade items along with other Indigenous goods and craft supplies.

Carie makes things like beaded earrings, moccasins, and regalia, each made with care and deep cultural meaning. Her work helps keep Mi'kmaq traditions alive and gives her a way to express her story and spirit.

Carie works closely with her daughter Bella, and together they share their art at powwows, local markets, and now online. Their business is not just about selling items. It is about sharing culture, supporting other Indigenous creators, and building a future rooted in tradition and pride.
